ABOUT DYING GIRAFFE RECORDINGS
We are regularly asked what the name Dying Giraffe stands for. Well, there is a multiple answer to this question.
Originally, the expression Dying Giraffe comes for the Southpark series and later started living its own life on the internet: "this sounds like a dying giraffe". Which more or less stands for: “I have never heard of this and don’t know what to make of it” This is what we translated to music, since as a label we release new music.
Furthermore, giraffes have long necks. They use it mainly for reaching those juicy and green leaves high in the trees. We stick out our necks for “our” bands and labels by coaching them closely and support them where the promotion and distribution of their music is concerned.
Fortunately, in 2010 we can state that the name Dying Giraffe bears no relation to dying or becoming extinct in the literal sense of the word, despite the fact that the music industry is in turmoil and going through uncertain times.
THE DYING GIRAFFE RECORDINGS LABEL
Halfway 2004 Dying Giraffe Recordings was set up. At the time more or less as an online promotion and distribution platform and no more than a hobby, actually.
In 2006 we chose to become professional and to deal with label activities in a serious way. This also meant that we terminated the online promotion and distribution platform as we once started it.
Since that moment we have built up a catalogue of approximately 40 releases (2010). These days we release new tracks and albums on a regular basis under the Dying Giraffe label and numbers are on the increase every year.
Our musical style is mainly focused on alternative rock, indie rock, post-rock and singer-songwriter pop music, but occasional sidesteps to jazz, hiphop and experimental (theatre) music are possible too; our interest is broad and extends to several fields. We just love challenges!
Evidently, Dying Giraffe Recordings is not the biggest Dutch label, but definitely one of the most active and stable growers in the field of indie music. Our urge for further development and enlarging our market sensibly makes us dynamic and flexible and thus much more than just another player in the field.
Things really speeded up after we started collaborating with Munich/V2, the biggest independent party in the Benelux, giving Dying Giraffe Recordings not only the opportunity to grow as a label, but also to act as a partner for other label and independent acts where promotion and distribution are concerned.
DYING GIRAFFE RECORDINGS AS THE REPRESENTATIVE FOR LABELS AND DIY ACTS
Through the years we have become experienced when it comes to promotion and establishing close contacts with the media. Our active and committed attitude, professional and clear press kits and promotion material and fast information supply ensures a high success rate, resulting in a large style- related media exposure for our clients
Increasingly, we are being approached by (foreign) labels, booking offices, management firms and DIY/independent acts that are looking for promotional support. Our extensive network and scope enables us, in addition to our own releases, to take care of album and singles promotion for labels and bands who wish to present their music to the Benelux.
Moreover, Dying Giraffe Recordings can also take care of the distribution so that bands need not concern themselves with the distribution of their music in this new territory.
POSTLUDE
It goes without saying that we base our choices on our ideas of what constitutes great music and what we consider feasible given the possibilities of the particular style. We only work with parties that, just like ourselves, are serious, committed and interested, and at least as enthusiastic as we are to realize the best possible releases.
